Working
at McDonald is unfit for young children. Many
of America’s school going youth have part
time work at fast food joints
that include McDonald. These jobs taken by the
youth undermine their school attendance and their involvement in academic practices. These students get
to value the dollar than their education while at the same
time acquiring other undesirable values. Most teen-jobs today are highly structured and lack any
educational values as they provide little
or no entrepreneurial opportunities or self-discipline or self-scheduling. At McDonalds, the
tasks of the youths are spelled out creating no room for
creativity, initiative or even the primary
rearrangements.
The
fast food centers
have become a breeding zone for robot like youths, rather than working towards increasing their knowledge in putting technology in application,
are working in work conditions of Yester years. Many argue that
these jobs fit
for non-educated and the minority youngsters
rather than the middle class and
the college going youths. The
teens work for long hours with a third of all the fast
food workers laboring for more
than 30 hours a week. Often, the stores
close late I the night and
the youths have
to clean up and make the tallies
before going home. Supervision is tight as the operators of these
chains want to cut on their cost by using teens to supervise teens. The teen jobs do
not provide early lessons related to work ethics, but
it gives them a chance to stay away
from their academics as well as giving
them a shortcut to the aspects of adulthood.

As
Etzioni argues, working at
McDonald is not suitable for young teens. The fast
food chains do not give teens the skills they
may apply in their future careers. The young
people working in these joints do
get a chance to be creativity
or initiative as most of the procedures
are laid out; therefore, the youths lack
the opportunity to learn any entrepreneurial skills. On the contrary,
the teens working on these fast food
chains are likely to acquire negative values
such as alcohol drinking, immorality
and drug abuse.
Working at these places exposes youths
to the risks of learning these values
as different people who might instill the vises to the
teens as they interact frequent
the fast food
chains. The teens might also consider themselves to be of age as they are among the working class
hence being attempted to engage in adult practices such
as drinking, smoking and sexual activities. The teens can easily afford these luxuries
from the little they earn from their part-time jobs.
In addition, I agree with Etzioni that working at a fast food chains
undermines the young people’s education.
Majority of the youths working in these chains may fail
to attend their lectures as they work for
the most part
of the day. Similarly, they may fail to complete their homework as they as they are working during their free time. Furthermore,
working in a fast food chains undermines
the rights of the youths. Their employees work long
hours, and they
even work late
in the night. Working for wrong
hours is against the rights of the employees
as the law stipulates
the maximum hours one should work
in a day. It is also against the rule
of law to employ a minor.
