LITERACY NARRATIVE

 I find self-study habits to be one of the foundations of my academic achievement. I started to develop self-study habit during my pre-school age. This practice involved me allocating time for reading and reviewing lessons, and it gradually grew into my maturity and growth. Setting time to read has greatly helped me in my self-learning. Reading is an addition to what I learn from school. I have therefore formed strict reading time habits that are a time for me to concentrate and reflect. I study in an environment that is free from distractions. Practicing reading habits has not only helped me improve my academic achievements but has also positively impacted on my social and emotional aspects of learning. I can now confidently answer exams questions when I have already read about it in my personal study. I am also comfortable responding to classroom questions on some things that my teacher discusses in the lesson that I have read. During my reading, I get involved in critical and creative thinking and also Metacognition. These are aspects that have helped me develop the skills of higher Order of thinking. Thus, reading has helped me broaden my world view as well as enabling me have critical reading skills.

  As a good reader, I understand individual sentences as well as the organizational structure of a written piece of work. I can follow arguments comprehend ideas and detect implications. I have a wide scope of vocabulary, and I can determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word by understanding the context of the passage. As a good reader, I can extract the important ideas from a written piece of work. I credit my large vocabulary from my extensive reading.
 I find reading to be a multifaceted process that involves word comprehension, recognition, motivation, and fluency. It is a cognitive process that involves coding of symbols so as to derive and construct meanings through reading.  I can share ideas and information with others. Reading is a means of acquiring a language for communication purposes. My relationship with a text I read is complex because it depends on my prior knowledge, attitude, experiences and community language that is socially and culturally situated. Reading is a continuous process that requires continuous development and practice.
  Reading is, therefore, the main source of learning because it helps one get the meaning from a printed material. For me to read, I have to identify words in a text and process them through word recognition. Readers also have to construct a word and understand them through comprehension. Lastly, a reader has to coordinate the identification of words and make meaning so that their reading becomes accurate and automatic. This achievement is fluency. Also in most cases readers can derive meaning from a printing without identifying all the words. Thus, reading in an overall sense involves weaving together word comprehension and recognition in a fluent ways. In the development of word recognition, it is essential to know to break apart and manipulate the sounds of a word through phoneme areas. Therefore, reading is an essential part of independent learning as well as improving our knowledge of a wide range of issues all around us. It is the main source of our learning.
Reading is also a means of getting to know other cultures and sciences. We learn about other people’s culture by reading literature on diverse communities. Reading or studying in another country away from home provides a good opportunity to participate and observe foreign cultures. Living here in the United States gives me a chance to practice my English language skills through immersion since English is not my native language. The long-term nature of studying in this university provides me a chance to the day to day life of people in this land. Thus understanding the American culture can be through reading several texts about the social issues of people around and how we can improve interactions with them. Reading has also helped me promote global awareness and improve international collaboration. It has enabled me be around individuals with knowledge about different perspectives. Cultural knowledge has also helped me make informed decisions and acquire transferable skills. Thus, reading about other cultures will always be of great use to me, and it will remain part of my life. It is because, after graduating from this institution, I may work in foreign countries or remain here in the United States.
 Reading also helps me understand science.
 I frequently read science textbooks. Reading science textbooks and texts mainly requires the same critical analysis, thinking and active engagement just in the same way as carrying out hands-on activities in science. To be good scientists, I have to be good readers who engage prior knowledge and forms new hypothesis. I have to have evaluating understanding, establishing plans and determining the importance of information. Reading science books also calls me to describe patterns, contrast, and compare, draw conclusions, make inferences, evaluate sources and generalize sources.
 Reading is also a way of me investing or spending my time well. Rather than spending lots of time during the day chatting with friends on Facebook or face to face, I prefer reading printed works. I love reading anything, from fictional, educational, news articles, scientific to literature texts that give me something new to ponder every day. Also, reading helps me in my academic, personal and career development because I always have something to say about any topic. Through reading, I can contribute human civilization by first having an understanding of the past civilizations that have influenced us today. I can learn more about social, moral communities and religions of human beings and how we differ amongst ourselves. Through reading, I learn about the values that define and inform communities. Thus, making me be an active and informed student. Text materials always have historical influence and their presentations of ideas have an enduring importance. I find text on civilizations to provoke productive discussions. I can also apply the historical influences to fields like literature humanities, art humanities, science frontiers, music humanities and in my university writing. Thus, reading strengthens me as a person and my role in this world in contributing knowledge and learning from others.
