Multicultural children are the offspring born to parents of different ethnic and racial backgrounds (Wardle, 1992). In his article, Francis Wardle urges that children from dual racial heritage risk going through the pressures of being different. It is because the physical characteristics of a person define her or his benefits or place in the society (1992). He writes that the modern American society is by arbitrary classification that is perpetrated by the government. Ethnic and racial-ethnic categories define everything ranging from school, entrance forms to social security cards. He adds that modern inter-racial families face plenty of pressures. For example, most minorities insist that those cross the ethnic and racial lines for marriage are rejecting ownership and pride in their group.

Also despite the school efforts aimed at increasing the needs for students of minority groups, these efforts are counterproductive for many biracial children. The author, therefore, calls on the interracial families to overcome such pressures and raise their children to develop a healthy self-esteem and be proud of their dual heritages (Wardle, 1992).
This article is a well-written paper that shows the extensive knowledge of the author about the concerns of interracial families and their children. Wardle does an excellent job in presenting as well as debunking the myths about mixed race families. His writing shows his knowledge on this issue. He draws from his personal experiences as an educator as well as a parent of biracial children.  This issue greatly reminds me of how our school setting has forgotten the needs of biracial children. The school system does not accommodate their unique needs and should develop strategies for enhancing learning in these children.
