Video 1: Derek Sivers: How to start a movement
Big Idea
Derek explains the importance of tapping the talents in the first followers in any setting. The followers ensure that the leader get credit for the good work. The identification of the potential in the first followers attracts others to form a movement with trust in the leader.
Most meaningful point
Derek states that “a leader needs to stand out and be ridiculed...” The statement is essential in explaining the role of a leader in every context. For one to have followers in what they do, they require to be different from others and be ready for all occurrences regardless of the consequences. As such, they attract followers who can correct them when need be.
Relationship to personal experience


The scenario relates to my experiences in an organization where the leader did not accept any ideas from other employees. It resulted in strained work relationships.
Relationship to my perception of an effective engineering Leader
An effective engineering leader should be accommodative of the ideas from others and be ready to accept negative feedback from their followers. As such, they stop being controlling and become understanding.

Big Idea
Dudley explains the importance of demonstrating leadership in the everyday life. Leadership is not something to make persons greater than they are. It should allow them to interact with others freely and make a difference to their lives.

Dudley states that “we have made leadership about changing the world.” He explains that it should be about letting people understand that they are also agents of change.
Relationship to personal experience
I had an experience in my internship with a leader who worked closely with other employees to empower them in understanding their potential.
Relationship to my perception of an effective engineering Leader
My perception of an effective engineering leader is one who listens to the ideas of others and incorporates them in decision making. It impacts positively on the others in their everyday lives that they have the potential to effect changes.
Article: Authentic Leaders
Big Idea
Every person should work towards personal growth and development by devoting themselves to their work. It is because they all have the potential to inspire and empower others through the work they do. An authentic leader understands themselves and work for excellence and not copying others.
Most meaningful point
The authors explain that “superior results for a certain period are the ultimate mark of an authentic leader.” Thus, the best way of identifying authentic leaders is focusing on the output of the work they do.
Relationship to personal experience
I work in a local group as a leader, and I ensure that we deliver results according to the set goals. Our main activity is educating youths on the dangers of drug abuse in which we recruit people who abstain from drug abuse. The measure of my work is the number of youths we enroll for the program.
Relationship to my perception of an effective engineering Leader
I think that an effective engineering leader should be able to meet the deadlines in time. The schedules set for certain tasks should be adhered to by the leader to avoid delays in the delivery of essential services and goods. Thus, the effectiveness of the leader depends on the delivery of results.
