I have found myself
lying on three occasions over the past few days. Considering the situations
that I found myself in when telling the lies, the number of the lies does not
surprise me. In each of the situations I lied, I was trying to either help
myself or a friend who was in need and that the situations would have been
different I had not lied.
Question two
One of these lies was
that I had seen the man who alighted at a previous stop take something out of
the strangers pocket but did not realize what it was as yet I had seen the
conductor steal from the stranger. The assertion, in this case, is that I have
used the bus as my mode of transport for a long time and even became friends with
the crew to an extent they would occasionally give me free transport. The
stranger, in this case, seemed to come from an above average background
considering how he dressed and the phones he carried. Had I ratted out the
conductors, it was more than likely that they would lose not only their jobs
but also face prosecution. I, on the other hand, would lose the occasional
favors of not paying and the fact that they knew I saw them and chose to lie,
they would be indebted to me, implying more benefits. Frankfurt in his
description of lying considers it to be the conscious deception act, which from
the issue of the lie I told falls under this classification (Frankfurt, 2009).
Question three
The value I upheld, in
this case, was protecting my friends from losing their jobs and possible
prosecution. Considering that the victim seemed more than capable of replacing
the wallet and the lost cash, I can assert that the value had a greater
significance that the case of strict and total honesty at that moment. The fact
that I was sure I would continue enjoying the benefits of free rides from these
friends who were now indebted to me further increased the value of increasing
the value of my deception.
Question four
Socrates believes that
a gadfly ensures that the society does not exhibit traced of conceit, abiding
by truth and honor in all their duties. The gadfly serves to provoke attributes
that are virtue and honorable in the society, that they society will finally
reap the benefits that are associated with adopting fair and just acts.
Frankfurt, (2009), a bullshiter according to Frankfurt is an individual who is
hiding their commitment to the truth, ignoring the truth altogether instead of
acknowledging it, they would not be an effective gadfly. The rationale is that
the main role of a gadfly is in the restoration of honor and virtue in the
society through the promotion of the truth, anything that serves to hide or
ignore the truth thus cannot be a gadfly.
Question five
I believe a gadfly is
necessary for the health of society. The rationale behind this assertion is
that considering the manner in which deception has become part of all members
of the society, it is essential to have an individual who champions the truth
by ensuring that others are conscious of this truth. Through this, it would be
possible to uphold some form of justice and fairness in the society.
